Polystyrene (EPS) absorbing materials are composite absorbing materials prepared by using foamed polystyrene (Expanded Polystyrene, abbreviated as EPS) as the base material and introducing absorbing agents (such as carbon-based fillers, ferrites, metal powders, etc.) through physical or chemical methods.   • Polystyrene (EPS) absorbing materials are composite absorbing materials prepared by using foamed polystyrene (Expanded Polystyrene, abbreviated as EPS) as the matrix and introducing absorbing agents (such as carbon-based fillers, ferrites, metal powders, etc.) through physical or chemical methods. They possess the lightweight and low-cost characteristics of EPS as well as the electromagnetic wave absorption function. 


    Its core characteristic is manifested in the synergy between structure and function: 

    Matrix advantage: EPS is a classic closed-cell foam material with an extremely low density (typically 0.01 - 0.05 g/cm³). It possesses excellent thermal insulation, water resistance, and processing properties. The honeycomb-like units formed by the closed-cell structure can create physical scattering and reflection paths for electromagnetic waves, providing a spatial carrier for the absorption agent to function. 


    Absorption mechanism: Electromagnetic wave attenuation is achieved through two methods - firstly, the active loss of the absorbing agent, such as carbon black and carbon fibers, which can generate dielectric loss through dipole polarization and interface polarization; while materials like carbonyl iron powder, which are of magnetic loss type, convert electromagnetic energy through hysteresis loss and eddy current loss; secondly, the auxiliary effect of the foam structure, the closed-cell units of EPS cause the electromagnetic waves to reflect multiple times within the pores, prolonging the interaction time with the absorbing agent and enhancing the energy dissipation efficiency. 

    Performance features: While maintaining the advantages of lightweight EPS (easy to cut, can be processed into flat plates and special-shaped parts, and low cost), by adjusting the types and dosages of the absorbing agent, effective absorption of electromagnetic waves in the 1-18GHz frequency band can be achieved (the reflection loss is usually -10dB to -25dB). However, the temperature resistance is relatively limited (the long-term operating temperature is ≤70℃), and it is suitable for electromagnetic protection scenarios in medium and low frequency, and at normal temperatures.

    Packaging and Transportation Field: As a cushioning material for electronic devices (such as smart phones and precision instruments), it provides shock protection while absorbing the interference from external electromagnetic radiation during transportation to the devices. It is particularly suitable for packaging of cost-sensitive civilian electronic products. 


    Building and Home Protection: Used for filling the spaces between building walls and ceilings, or made into decorative panels for homes, it absorbs the electromagnetic radiation generated by indoor appliances (such as microwave ovens, routers), reducing electromagnetic pollution; its heat insulation property can be combined with the absorption wave function to achieve an integrated "absorption wave - insulation" effect. 


    Small-scale electromagnetic shielding scenario: As an auxiliary absorbing material in simple electromagnetic shielding boxes and test environments, it is used in conjunction with other high-performance absorbing materials to absorb stray electromagnetic waves in specific frequency bands, reducing interference in the test environment. The cost is only 1/3 - 1/2 that of materials such as polyurethane. 


    Toys and consumer products: The low toxicity and lightweight characteristics of EPS make it suitable for the inner lining of electronic toys and smart wearable devices for children. These products meet the safety requirements for consumer goods. The anti-radiation function can reduce the electromagnetic radiation from the devices that may affect the human body (especially children). 


    Temporary electromagnetic protection facilities: In scenarios such as outdoor temporary communication stations and emergency command tents, they serve as quick-to-construct electromagnetic protection materials, absorbing the electromagnetic interference from the surrounding environment and ensuring the short-term stable operation of equipment. Their characteristics of being easy to cut and install are suitable for the needs of temporary scenarios. 


    The development direction of this material focuses on performance enhancement and functional expansion: On one hand, by using composite nano-absorbing agents (such as graphene and carbon nanotubes), the high-frequency absorption performance is improved, breaking through the limitation of the narrow absorption frequency band of traditional EPS; on the other hand, through flame retardant modification (such as adding phosphorus-based flame retardants), the safety level is enhanced, expanding its application in indoor high-demand scenarios, and further exerting its practical value of "low cost - easy processing - basic absorption".
